Georgia Film Locations: TV & Movie Spots You Can Visit

June 3, 2026

Quick Summary

Chippewa Square in Savannah is where the Forrest Gump bench scene was filmed. Jackson Street Bridge in Atlanta is the iconic Walking Dead opening shot. Senoia's downtown is the show's Woodbury and Alexandria. Downtown Jackson stands in for Stranger Things' Hawkins, and Covington's Mystic Grill is the Vampire Diaries main set.

Georgia is the third-largest film production hub in the world, behind only California and New York. The 30% state tax credit introduced in 2008 draws hundreds of productions per year — everything from superhero tentpoles to prestige television. The result is a state full of recognizable locations that fans travel specifically to see.

The 7 sites below cover the most visited film locations in Georgia, from Savannah’s Forrest Gump square to the small towns that became Hawkins, Indiana.

Atlanta

Atlanta and its close-in suburbs host most of the state’s film infrastructure, with purpose-built studio complexes and a dense collection of on-location filming sites.

The Jackson Street Bridge in Old Fourth Ward is the location of the most recognized image from The Walking Dead — the opening of the pilot episode, where Rick Grimes on horseback rides across a bridge toward an abandoned Atlanta skyline. Frequently Asked Questions

Where was The Walking Dead filmed in Georgia?

The Walking Dead used multiple Georgia locations. The opening shot of Rick on a horse crossing a bridge is Jackson Street Bridge in Atlanta. Downtown Senoia (Coweta County) served as Woodbury and later Alexandria throughout the show's run and is the most dedicated Walking Dead filming location — several storefronts are still dressed as they appeared in the show.

Where was Forrest Gump filmed in Georgia?

The famous bench scene — where Forrest sits telling his life story — was filmed at Chippewa Square in Savannah, Georgia. The bench is no longer there (it was a prop, now in the Savannah History Museum), but the square itself is unchanged and is a free stop in the Savannah historic district.

Where was Stranger Things filmed in Georgia?

Stranger Things filmed primarily in the Atlanta area. Downtown Jackson, Georgia (Butts County, about 45 miles south of Atlanta) serves as Hawkins, Indiana — the main town setting. The Emory Briarcliff Campus in Decatur (DeKalb County) was used for Hawkins National Laboratory. Both locations are free to visit.

Why does so much filming happen in Georgia?

Georgia's film tax credit — introduced in 2008 and among the most generous in the US — gives productions a 30% tax credit on qualifying expenditures. The result is the state has become the third-largest film production hub in the world, hosting over 400 productions per year. The combination of varied landscapes, purpose-built studio infrastructure, and the tax credit drives the volume.
